Testimonials and Reviews
“Great price. I have gotten tattooed at Broken Clover a couple times now. My artist is Jay Tats and every time I pull up he is very hospitable and truly cares about putting the best piece of art on your body. From the stencil to beginning the tattoo he makes sure you’re comfortable, and he’s a cool person to talk to as well ? Very professional from start to finish. I always have a 10/10 experience when I come to Broken Clover.”
“… Evidence of the staffs’ artistic talent even shows in the artwork they have done which adorns the walls of the shop. The prices are fair for the high quality of work being done here. The staff always has time to answer questions and they take an active interest in each other’s work….!”
“Great shop with some great artists. These guys are for serious tattoo collectors who want a fantastic custom piece.”

Jay — High-Contrast Black & Grey, Portrait & Lettering Tattoo Artist in Tucson
Custom Chicano script, graffiti-inspired lettering, Custom black-and-grey tattoos, portraits, religious imagery, horror, graffiti-style lettering, and large-scale work.
Jay creates clean, custom lettering built for the body—not copied fonts. Book Jay for names, memorials, family pieces, street-inspired script, and full-scale black-and-gray projects.
His work is a strong fit for clients who want a tattoo with real weight behind it: a portrait that needs expression, a religious piece that needs presence, a dark sleeve concept, bold script, or a custom design meant to become part of a larger collection.
Jay’s style favors contrast, rich shading, clean black-and-grey values, and compositions that hold together from a distance as well as up close.
Custom black-and-grey work with presence
Black-and-grey tattoos need structure. Without strong contrast and a clear focal point, a detailed tattoo can turn muddy or lose its impact over time.
Jay approaches each project with a focus on strong placement, readable design, and the visual decisions that make a tattoo feel intentional on the body. His portfolio includes portraits, dramatic faces, religious imagery, dark symbolism, roses, lettering, and large custom pieces that build depth through shading and contrast.
Jay is especially well suited for:
- High-contrast black-and-grey tattoos
- Portraits and expressive faces
- Religious imagery and spiritual themes
- Horror and dark custom work
- Graffiti-style, Chicano-inspired, and custom lettering
- Larger arm, leg, chest, and sleeve projects
- American traditional influence
- Coverups and reworks
- Custom designs for serious tattoo collectors
Serious Letters, built around the client
Jay works by appointment and offers half-day and full-day rates for clients who want to give a larger project the time it deserves.
He is a superb choice for people who take script seriously. Whether it represents family, faith, a personal history, a favorite visual style, or an image they have carried around in their head for years.
Clients describe Jay as hospitable, professional, and genuinely invested in putting the best possible piece on their body. From reviewing the stencil through the beginning of the tattoo, he makes sure the client is comfortable and understands the direction of the project.
That combination of serious artistry and direct client care is important with large or meaningful tattoos. The point is not to rush someone through a chair. The point is to create a piece worth returning to.
Portraits, lettering, and large-scale projects
Jay is the real deal. He does not use fonts. He draws every letter by hand.
That matters when you want more than a name written in some generic script off the internet. Jay makes the letters fit the spot, flow with the body, and carry the same attitude as the person wearing them. Nothing is typed or copied. It is drawn for you, sometimes directly on you
He does the same thing with portraits and big work. A portrait needs a face that looks alive. A sleeve needs to look like one piece when it is done, not like you got bored eight times.
Send Jay your idea, where you want it, how big, and whatever references you have. He’ll tell you what will hit and what won’t.
